One of our most talented WildStar Cosplayers made it to the EuroCosplay championship finals which took place two weeks ago during MCM Comic Con in London. Orena took on the role of Buck Wanderbeck, the Exile Explorer from our announcement trailer. As part of her performance during the competition, Orena had to perform a small sketch and asked our English Community Manager and ex-voiceover Mark “Anlath” Hulmes to provide the audio.
The WildStar team attended the competition and had a chance to meet Buck err we mean Orena, in the flesh, ask her some questions and off course take pictures.
I discovered cosplay during a local convention near where I was living and I wanted to use Cosplay as a mean to improve my tailoring knowledge.
I have made my first cosplay in 2009 for Japan Expo. I was cosplaying a male character from a video game back then.
I really loved the design of Buck in the announcement Trailer. That was also a real challenge for me since the costume was really complex: open shirt, several pieces of armour and LEDs. I did hesitate for a long time before picking Buck for this contest.
I started working on the costume in January 2013, I didn't even knew when the game would be released back then. I took my time as I had also other projects on the side. I quickly realized however that the Buck costume would require more involvement since it has lot of details. The lasts months before the contest were a marathon for me.
Regarding the costume, I made the choice to work mainly with leather could it be soft or hard leather. The whole coat, armlets, the leg bandolier and the small belt are made of leather. Knee-pads, goggles and the large belt are partly made of leather but also in Worbla (a type of thermoplastic).
The costume also has some parts moulded using resin: belt buckles, buttons, and the glowing gems on the belt and the seam on the shoulder pad.
The fingerless gloves were knitted by me. Bullets were lathed in aluminium. I also added LEDs in the belt and the shoulder pad, like the real Buck.
The EuroCosplay Championship is a European Contest where each participating country is allowed to have 2 participants who are selected during national cosplay events. I was selected to represent France in December 2013 during the Toulouse Games Show.
During the final which took place during MCM Comic Con in London, the total grade was made of: 40% for accuracy (how close is the costume from the original), 40% for construction (how detailed is the costume chosen) and 20% for the scene performance. All these criteria were rated by judges who are internationally recognized in rating cosplays.
Many thanks to Russell Fenton for that last photo!
